Photo of the Week: Templo Dios del Viento in Tulum

Tulum, Mexico

Templo Dios del Viento in Tulum, Mexico

Situated on rocky seaside cliffs that overlook the sparkling Caribbean Sea, the God of Winds Temple (aka Templo Dios del Viento) is one of several archeological sites within the Pre-Columbian Maya walled city of Tulum.

Tulum is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, making it a hugely popular tourist attraction for visitors to the Riviera Maya. When compared to neighbouring ruins like Chichen Itza, Coba and Tikal (in Guatemala), Tulum is not as structurally impressive but its hype comes from its outstanding location on the dreamy Caribbean coast.

It’s ironic that the Mayan Riviera has become renowned for its lavish seaside resorts and luxurious buildings. The city of Tulum must have had a similar reputation amongst the Mayan people back in its prime.
