The Magnificent Amber Fort in Jaipur, India
A clear highlight from our travels to northern India was visiting the Amber Fort in the town of Amer, located about 10 km outside the city of Jaipur.
We originally arrived in Jaipur knowing very little about what to see and do, so our expectations were fairly low. That is, until an overly animated backpacker at our hotel raved about Amber Fort. Needless to say, we were glad he recommended we visit this incredible fortress.
It’s one of the most impressive structures we’ve witnessed on our travels! We couldn’t believe our eyes when our tuk-tuk driver turned the corner and we saw the fortress for the first time. It’s absolutely stunning.
If you do visit Amber Fort, leave yourself at least a few hours to explore because it’s really big (see what we mean by looking at this aerial photo).
The fort is loaded with fascinating history, so it’s a good idea to find a local tour guide. You’ll find lots of guides for hire outside the entrance but use at your own risk; it can be hit or miss with who is actually legit.
